According to Vastu Shastra, the south-west is the ideal direction to allocate bedrooms, as this direction receives the least amount of sunlight—symbolizing rest, rejuvenation and longevity. “We can’t always follow these directions, considering how most of us now live in small, multifunctional apartment configurations,” Vastu expert Neeta Sinha from Mumbai-based AstroArchitecture says, “But in a post-pandemic scenario, where the next wave is just around the corner, it is important to make sound sleep a priority to ensure we stay in good health.” Improve your sleep cycle with these tips from the celebrity Vastu consultant.
1. Use natural materials
Opt for a sturdy wooden bed, rather than a metal frame, and sheets made from natural fibres that breathe. Your body releases a lot of negativity while resting, so let the space under your bed remain vacant rather than occupying it with luggage, bed linen, or storage drawers. For the same reason, four-poster beds trap psychic debris and aren’t considered Vastu-compliant.
2. Bed placement
When you lie in bed, let your head point towards the south or east and feet towards the north. This position aligns your body’s magnetic field with that of the Earth. “Ignoring this advice can result in many health problems, like insomnia, high blood pressure or persistent nightmares,” Sinha says.
Also take what is above the bedroom into consideration: “For example, the bed should not be not be directly under a staircase, a beam or washroom,” Sinha explains stating that these placements can make a person feel high-strung and restless.
3. Placement of mirrors
Placing a mirror in the bedroom, is again a tricky subject, in both Feng Shui and Vastu Shastra. Never sleep in an area that has multiple mirrors that face each other, as this creates an infinite space in between them. Sinha understands the necessity of keeping a mirror in the bedroom, but she recommends not more than one, and always keeping it curtained or covered when not in use.
4. Display appropriate artwork
Paintings and photographs in the bedroom should always display couples or pairs. Even if you’re a single person, avoid a solo photograph, as it symbolizes loneliness. Choose art that is cheerful and elevating, eschew anything that is too intense or brooding, as art has a tremendous impact on the subconscious mind.
